Ervin Willie Bishop, 80, of West Main Street, a former Wilmington selectman, died Monday morning at Putnam Memorial Hospital in Bennington following a period of ill health. He had served on the board of selectman for nine years and had served as chairman of that board for seven years. Mr. Bishop was born on June 8, 1901, in Wilmington, the son of Willie G. and Ada (Wheeler) Bishop. On Sept. 9, 1939, he married the former Maxine Ray, who survives. In his early years, he worked as a surveyor for the New England Power Co. in the Somerset area. He also was employed at Childs Tavern Garage and Brown's Garage. During the 1920s, he built and operated a garage with Leon Covey on West Main Street and then in 1933 he opened his own garage, also on West Math Street. He operated this business until 1962, when he leased the property to Harold Lackey. He also was employed as a bus driver for the Wilmington school district. Mr. Bishop was a member of Wilmington Baptist Church, a 46-year member of Social Lodge No. 38, Free & Accepted Masons, and a member of the Good Fellows Club. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Reginald of Middlebury; two daughters, Mrs. Jane Keane of New Haven, Conn., and Mrs. Sally Bishop of Wilmington; four sisters, Mrs. Esther Wheeler and Mrs. Viola Morse of Wilmington, Mrs. Grace Farrington of Whitingham and Mrs. Hilda Tower of Jacksonville; two grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. A sister, Mrs. Edna Dix, died in 1980. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Wilmington Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Paul Blacketor officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
