Mildred Ida May (Adkins) Shafer passed away on August 26, 2018 at the Sunrise Mt. Vernon Retirement Community in Alexandria, Virginia. She was 96. Born on January 3, 1922 in Frederick County, Maryland, Mildred was predeceased by her husband, Earl Shafer; her eldest daughter, Beverly (Shafer) Barton; her parents, Charles Emmert and Alice Catherine (Brandenburg) Adkins; her sisters Hilda Wiles; Freida Eigenbrode; Virginia McMath; Francis Grimm, and Barbara Kolb. Mildred, known as “Skip”, was a 25-year volunteer at Inova Mt. Vernon Hospital. In the early years of marriage, Skip took great pleasure in bowling and visiting with friends and family. Later, she was surrounded by the joy of a close and loving family frequently coming in and out of her house. Her family was her life. She had three children, two of whom survive her: John Shafer (Dianne) of Richmond, VA and Patricia (Shafer) Hampton of Alexandria. Also surviving her are her 7 grandchildren, Beth Ann Posey (Michael), Gray Barton (Liz); Kathy Herrington (Jim); Michael Shafer (Denise) ; Eric Hampton (Sholet), Mark Hampton (Jessica), and Christopher Hampton (Beth), her 16 great-grandchildren, and her 5 great-great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Phyllis Kolb and Shirley Smith, both of Frederick County, MD, and a host of nieces and nephews also survive her. Services will be held at Demaine Funeral Home on Thursday, August 30, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. viewing and 11:00 a.m. service with burial to follow at 12:30 p.m. in Mt. Comfort Cemetery. The five grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers, Jessie Hampton and E.J. Hampton will serve as honorary junior pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Mildred (Skip) Shafer to the Inova Mt. Vernon Hospital Auxiliary, 2201 Parkers Lane, Alexandria, VA 22306.
