After graduating from New Oxford High School, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served from 1943 to 1946. After the war, Joe, a child of the Great Depression, looked to his Aunt Geraldine (Jerry) Geesey, an office manager, as a role model for success. With a sharp mind and unfailing determination he set his sights on being a businessman. He enrolled in correspondence courses in bookkeeping and business. From his early beginnings as a clerk at the Emeco Corporation, to a stint as the owner/-proprietor of the New Oxford General Store, to "right hand man" to the owner of H.O. Toor Shoe Corp., to his ultimate success as Vice President of Operations for the Freeman Shoe Company, Joe worked his way to the executive suite through brains, hard work, guts, and integrity.
Joe was also a successful family man. He had the rare privilege of true love twice. The day after he turned 80 years old, Joe married the second love of his life, Clara Hoffmann Miller. Joe treated Clara's daughter, Billie Jo Olson, and Billie's three children as if they were his own daughter and grandchildren. To his California family, Joe was a pinnacle of stability, faith, integrity, and fun. Joe enjoyed nearly 49 years of marriage to his first love, Anna (Nancy) Jane Klunk Miller (July 17, 1924 - December 6, 1996). Their marriage was a hallmark for love, devotion, hard work, laughter, and fun. Joe and Nancy raised six children, Joseph J. Miller, Jr. (Kristine), Margaret A. Newcomer, Timothy M. Miller (Rita), Mary Lynn Ziemer, Andrea J. Miller (Doug Watson), and Paula Jo Miller (Lowell Wiles). They were further blessed with nine grandchildren and nine great-grand-children.
Joe's children are grateful to their dad and his grandchildren are grateful to their Pop-Pop for imparting to them a deep understanding that through higher education, hard work, persistence, and integrity one can succeed; through the love and support of family and faith in God, one will always have comfort; and with a quick wit, a love of laughter and games - especially cards - "the ride" will be a whole lot more fun.
Thank you, Joseph Jerome Miller, Sr. for your many gifts and selfless love. We are grateful and comforted by the knowledge that you are at peace and will always be with us. A toast to you, Joe, "it's five o'clock somewhere!" A mass will be held in Joe's memory on Saturday, December 13, at 8 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 106 Carlisle St., New Oxford. The mass will be followed by a reception at the Cross Keys Banquet Center, 6110 York Road, New Oxford. Memorial gifts are appreciated and may be donated in Joe's name to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
