Ralph "Dale" Montgomery, 64, of Smithton, died Tuesday, May 1, 2007, in Smithton.

Dale was born July 25, 1942, in Sedalia, the only child of Ralph David and Ruth Demand Montgomery. On Sept. 5, 1965, in Sedalia, he was married to Carolyn L. Oehrke Montgomery, who survives of the home.

He lived south of Smithton most of his life. He graduated from Smithton High School in 1960, and attended Central Missouri State University for one year. During high school, he played basketball and baseball. He was known for being a switch hitter during baseball games.

In 1961, he went to work for the Missouri Highway Department, where he helped build I-70 and several other roads in Missouri. He also worked for his father-in-law's company, Earl Oehrke Builders, Embree Construction and Royal Seal Construction, as a superintendent, Wilson Foods and Midland Printing. He retired from Missouri Department of Transportation in 2002, after 26 years of service.

Upon retirement, he wanted to return to the Smithton area, where he built a new home near his family "home place." He loved traveling, seeing all the covered bridges in Missouri and Iowa and taking pictures.

He was an avid hunter. He loved fishing in his pond and living in the country. He loved to go "junkin" (antiquing) and to tractor pulls. He also was a race fan.

He especially loved having his grandchildren in the country with him. He drove Smithton School Bus No. 6, known as "No. 6 Rocks." He drove the same route that he rode as a child. He often volunteered to drive the bus on field trips, so he could be with the kids.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church and attended the Celebration Center.

Also surviving are a daughter, Tammy Andrus, and her husband, Mike; a son, Shannon Dale Montgomery, and his wife, Glenita; and six grandchildren, Brittany Blake, Ashley Pollard, Nate Andrus, Chance Montgomery, Ashley Miller and Kristen Miller.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church Celebration Center, with the Rev. Jim Downing Jr. officiating. Pallbearers will be Jim Richwine, Jim Perry, Ozzie Morris, Dale Monsees, Philip Monsees, Tracy Monsees, Eric Mothersbaugh and Cheryl Grimes. Honorary pallbearers will be Michael, Jason and Jada Oehrke, Mary Ann Richwine, Linda and Carrie Monsees, Virginia Monsees, Linda Morris, Stanley and Colleen Deuschle, Gail and Sue Demand, Mike and Carol George, Robert and Evelyn Porter, Gerry and Dolores Wolf and Jan Perry. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Ewing-Schutte-Semler Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Celebration Center.

The family suggests memorial contributions to a memorial fund in his name at the Celebration Center or to the Lake Creek Cemetery Fund.
