Martin was one of 7 children born to farmer Martin Léopoldes the Younger (1796 - 1837) and Madeleine Stoetzel Léopoldes (1799 - 1868). He was born in Schaffhouse-pres-Seltz, Alsace, France, where both the Léopoldes and Stoetzel families lived for at least a few generations as farmers on the fertile land close to the Rhine River. Martin was the 3rd in his paternal line to be named Martin - the name 'Martin' being the Patron Saint Name for the town of Schaffhouse-près-Seltz.

Martin's birth record from the Schaffhouse-près-Seltz, Bas-Rhin, Alsace Archives is the attached photo. A general translation of the document:

"Recorded in the Town Hall of Schaffhouse-près-Seltz, Department of Bas-Rhin by the Mayor and Officer of the State at 9:00am on the 29th of July 1823 - the birth of a boy on the 28th of July 1823 at 1:00pm to be named Martin Léopoldes.

Before me, appeared Martin Léopoldes the Younger, Age 26, Farm Laborer of Schaffhouse-près-Seltz, who has presented the infant and has made this declaration. He is father of the boy. The mother of the boy is his wife, Madeleine Stöetzel of Schaffhouse-près-Seltz.

The childbirth took place at their home, House # 66.

Witnesses to this declaration are Barthelemy Löeffler, Age 30, Shoemaker - and Michel Oger, Age 50, Laborer. Both witnesses are residents of Schaffhouse-près-Seltz and have signed below - The Mayor of Schaffhouse-près-Seltz - Mayor Ignace Hoerdt"

After Martin's father died in Schaffhouse-près-Seltz in 1837, his mother moved the family to the nearby larger town of Seltz. Martin was living with his widowed mother and his 3 younger siblings - Charles, Madeleine and Joseph in Seltz in 1851.

Martin and Barbara Schall from Seltz, Alsace, came to America about 1853 (likely through the port of New Orleans), were married and together had 3 children in Louisville, Kentucky. There is no record of their marriage in/around Seltz in the early 1850's (or in the USA) and no immigration documentation into the USA.

Christ Leopold (1855-1891)
Anthony Leopold (1856-1913)
Margaret Leopold Popp (1860-1935)

Martin's U.S. Union Army Civil War volunteer enlistment record description in Oct 1861, Paintsville, Kentucky noted that he was 5' 7" tall, with sandy colored hair and grey eyes. He was honorably discharged with a disability in November 1862.

Martin was a Laborer and also a Watchman at the Ohio River at Louisville. The family lived on Bullitt Street in downtown Louisville which later became the part of the property for the Galt House Hotel complex. Martin and his wife Barbara are buried at Saint John Cemetery, but there is no record of a tombstone for either of them.
