Barbara (born Barbe) was the youngest daughter of Ignace Schall (b. 22 Mar 1778 Kutzenhausen, Bas Rhin, Alsace, France and d. 15 Jun 1822 in Seltz, Alsace), and Sybille Gries (b. 15 May 1782 Seltz, Bas-Rhin, Alsace France and d. 27 Dec 1840 in Seltz, Alsace). Barbara's father Ignace was a soldier in the Napoleon's French Army, the Light Infantry 10er Legere from 1798 - about 1804. Unfortunately Ignace died six months before his daughter Barbara was born.

Barbara's birth record from the Seltz, Bas-Rhin, Alsace Archives is the attached photo. A general translation of the document:

"Recorded in the Town Hall of Seltz, Department of Bas-Rhin by the Mayor and Officer of the State at 9:00am on the 8th of January 1823 - the birth of a girl on the 7th of the current month at 9:00pm to be named Barbe.

Before me, appeared Marguerite Pfeiffer, Age 38, the wife of Mr. Blatt and the Midwife of Seltz, who has presented the infant and has made this declaration. The father of the girl is the recently deceased Ignace Schall, Laborer of Seltz, who died here on 15 June 1822. The mother of the girl is his wife, Sybille Gries of Seltz.

Witnesses to this declaration are Paul Kalmbacher, Age 72 and Ignace Schiffmacher, Age 30 - both are residents of Seltz and have signed below - The Mayor of Seltz - Mayor Hoffmann"

Barbara had 6 siblings including her brother, Antoine Schall b. 4 Jul 1818 Seltz d. 16 June 1879 Seltz. An older sister of Barbara's, Apollonia Schall (1816-1869) came to America in 1854, marrying Erasmus Fitterer and lived in Spencer County, Indiana. Her other siblings were Marie Elisabeth (1811-1850), Joseph (1813-c.1872), Nicolas (1820-1866) and an oldest paternal half-brother, Andreas Schall (1802-1874).

Barbara became an orphan at 17 when her mother died in Seltz in 1840. Thankfully she had her older siblings to help support her. Her brother Antoine must have been a positive influence as Barbara named her 2nd son Anthony. During the years 1841 until she left for America about 1853, she was a domestic servant and nanny - for at least two prominent families in Seltz.

Barbara and Martin Léopoldes came to America about 1853 (likely through the port of New Orleans). There is no record of their marriage in/around Seltz in the early 1850's (or in the USA) and no immigration documentation into the USA.

The couple settled in Louisville where Barbara had a paternal first cousin - Victor Stoltz (1822-1869) who had emigrated from Seltz in the mid-1840's. Victor's brother Joseph Stoltz (1811-1893) and his family and in-laws also ended up in Louisville in 1854. Barbara's nephew - the son of her brother Antoine - Louis Schall (b. 1865 Seltz, d. 1952 Louisville) also emigrated to Louisville in 1889.

Barbara and Martin married and had three children:

Christ Leopold (1855-1891)
Anthony Leopold (1856-1913)
Margaret Leopold Popp (1860-1935)

Barbara and Martin lived on Bullitt Street, downtown Louisville close to the Ohio River. Bullitt Street was where the Galt House Hotel complex is currently located. According to the Louisville, Kentucky Death records, Barbara was buried at Saint John Cemetery in July 1885 - but there is no record that there is a tombstone for her or for her husband Martin.
