A son of General Nathan and Sarah (Sutton) Beasley, he attended Georgetown College where he learned surveying, and at age 20 became the principal engineer of the Ohio
Canal which connected the Scioto and Maumee Rivers. He married Sarah West on February 18, 1830. Their children were Washington W., St. Louis; Nathan C., Champaign; and Mary J., the wife of the Rev. Mildon P. Sink of Cincinati. Sarah Beasley died March 5, 1835. On February 25, 1836, he married Emily Jane Devore. Their children included: Alfred W., New York City; Sarah, married to the Rev. Samuel Godfrey; David, family farmstead; John D. and Thomas C., Champaign; James, family farmstead; William, Red Oaks, Iowa; Joseph, New York City; Henry, deceased; and Charles, family farmstead. A long time merchant, farmer and landowner, Beasley moed to Illinois in 1857. At one point he owned over 6,000 acres of land in Champaign and Hensley townships. An active Free Mason, he was a member of Western Star Lodge No. 240 A.F. and A.M.
