Dr. J.S. Jones, who has been a practicing physician for fifty years and a resident of Cowden the past 18 years, died at his home on Sunday, May 8, 1904, aged 76 years, 8 months, 26 days. He was born in Harrison county, O., Aug. 12, 1827, and came to Moccasin, Effingham county, in 1865.
Elizabeth Johnson, to whom he was married on Oct. 10, 1850, died in 1874 leaving him with five children, two having died in infancy. He was united in marriage to Christena Piper May 4, 1875, and to this union one child, Little Cliff, who lived only three years, was born. Beside his wife he leaves one son – Harry, of Shawnee, Okla., four daughters – Mrs. Robert Cox, of Chicago; Mrs. Florida Leechner of Okla.; Mrs. Annie McKinney, of Halford, Kansas; Mrs. Hattie Watson, of Clinton, Mo. fourteen grandchildren and one great grandchild, Little Lucile Carder, of Litchfield.
He contracted the small pox in March but the immediate cause of dissolution was a general breaking up of the system, his strength not being sufficient for him to rally.
Burial took place at Pleasant Grove cemetery in Effingham county May 10.

J.S. Jones, physician, Moccasin, was born in Harrison County, Ohio, in 1827. He was educated in Ohio and attended lectures in Cincinnati at the American Medical College. He began his practice in 1854, commencing practice in Millersburg, Iowa, remaining there till 1858, and then returned to Ohio and practiced at Bladensburg, Knox County, for six years, and then came to Effingham County, in 1865, and has been here ever since, with the exception of two years he was in Missouri, going for his wife’s health. Dr. Jones belongs to the eclectic school. He was married in Holmes County, Ohio, to Elizabeth Johnston, in 1850. His wife died in January, 1873. He was married in Effingham County, Ill., in 1876, to Tena Piper. He had seven children by his first wife (five are now living) and has one child by his present wife. He has always been Republican in his politics. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity. He is the son of William Jones, a native of Pennsylvania, who died in 1850. Dr. Jones’ mother died about 1840.
