Cabell H Bateman, age 82, died Thursday at the home of his daughter Mrs. Merritt Puckett, Ararat, Virginia. He had been ill about a year. He was born December 23, 1875 in Stokes County, North Carolina, son of Al and Sallie Slate Bateman. His wife the former Bertie Bingham died in 1934. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Puckett, Mrs Ed Gwynn, and Mrs Monroe Sawyers all of Ararat, Virginia and Mrs. Guy Cox of Thurmond; five sons Arthur and Monroe Bateman of Mount Airy, Hobart and Donald Bateman of Ararat, Virginia and Roy Bateman of Freeman, W. Va; 34 grandchildren, several great grandchildren; two sisters Mrs. Ellen Hendrick of Hillsville, Va and Mrs Perlina Puckett of West End. Funeral services were conducted on Saturday at the Doe Run Baptist by Rev Chris Sowers and Sampson Collins. Burial was in the church cemetery.
