Donald was born January 18, 1919 in Patrick County and was a son of the late Cabel and Bertie Lou Bridgeman Bateman.

He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Arthur Bateman, Roy Bateman, Hobert Bateman and Monroe Bateman; and four sisters, Annie Royall, Gracie Guynn, Helen Sawyers and Okra Puckett Hall.

Surviving are his wife, Mildred Opal Bowman Bateman of the home; five daughters, Judy Wilson of Ararat, Carolyn Woodruff and Lavonda Kirkman, both of Mount Airy, N.C., Mildred "Mickie" Martin of Stuart and Sharon Quesenberry of Mount Airy, N.C.; two sons, Lonnie Bateman of Mount Airy and Leslie "Lee" Bateman of Ararat; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and one sister-in-law.

Graveside services were held Tuesday at Doe Run Baptist Church cemetery in Ararat. The Rev. Homer Bowman officiated. The flag presentation was conducted by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mount Airy. He was retired from United Technology in Mount Airy, N.C., and was a member of Ararat Church of the Living God. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in the 551st Two-Engine Flying Training Squadron, Air Corps.
