Gale W. Durre was born September 9, 1926, the son of William and Zelma Durre of Edgewood, Illinois. Gale enlisted in the U. S. N. R. in April of 1944 at the age of 17 while still in high school. July 1, 1944, he entered college at Clinton, Mississippi. After serving 10 months of college training he was transferred to Great Lakes for his basic naval training. July 1, 1945 he was assigned to his ship, the USS Biloxi, in the radar division. At the time of the Japanese surrender he was in the vicinity of Japan. He rose to the rank of Seaman 1/c.
Gale did make it home safely. He married Florence Rentfro in 1947. They raised their family in the Mattoon area where they owned and operated a Radio and TV supply company.
Gale W. Durre died on October 6, 2010 and is buried at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Coles County, Illinois.
