Sam P Jones was born on May 10, 1889 in Davidson County, Tennessee, the son of Benjamin Bower "Ben" Jones (1834–1901) and Mary (Stovall) Jones.
He attended public schools in Davidson County and later in life lived with his sister Susie.
Sam had worked as a guard at Davidson County Workhouse, and living at 122 8th Avenue South in Nashville, he was 55 years old and a widower when he died of hepatic cirrhosis on January 4, 1945 at Protestant Hospital.
Survivors included sisters Susie (Jones) Brannon and Kate (Jones) Smith in Nashville, Tennessee and brothers Henry Jones and Matt Jones of Nashville and Herman Jones at Sheridan, Wyoming.
Burial was two days later in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Nashville.
