John and Dora (Herdgets) Miller came to the United States sailing on the
schoonerbrig MAGNET from Bremen, Germany with 9 persons in their party, one
being Marie Schmit to help with the children. The voyage was 59 days, with 80
passengers on the ship and G. Haslocp as their Captain. They arrived in the
harbor of Galveston on June 18, 1851. John was from Althammer in Silesia Prussia
and served in the Franco-Prussian War of 1848. They moved their way north from
Galveston and found their home in Fairfield, Freestone Co., Texas in 1857.
John's occupation, per census records says, blacksmith.
