Michael Fishel was the fifth of seven known children of Daniel Fishel (1780-1859) and Maria Magdalina Schneider Fishel (1781-1853), who married 30 Jan 1808 at Stokes (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina. Daniel had two additional children by a previous marriage to Sarah Elizabeth Zieglar Fishel (1778-1806).

Michael lived his life in the area around the Moravian community of Friedberg, which at the time of his birth was on the border between Stokes and Rowan Counties and is now on the border of Forsyth and Davidson Counties, North Carolina. He was a life long member of the Friedberg Moravian Church. Michael married Marie (Mary) Catherine Rothrock (1823-1868) on 03 Dec 1843 at Stokes (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina. Michael and Mary were the parents of ten known children, seven boys and three girls; namely:

1. Allen Alexander Fishel (1844-1845)
2. Belinda Julia Fishel Hege (1845-1900)
3. William Henry Fishel (1846-1968)
4. John Anderson Fishel (1848-1928)
5. Amos Christian Fishel (1850-1930)
6. Louise Amanda Fishel (1852-1937)
7. Killiam Thomas Fishel (1856-1876)
8. Jordan David Fishel (1858-1938)
9. Laura Catherine Fishel hege (1858-1935)
10. Isaac Parmenia Fishel (1866-1944)
