Eugene Robert Hoffman was born to William N and Rose V Hoffman on September 12, 1925 and joined the love of his life, Mary Ann, on their eternal journey on May 22, 2017.

He attended elementary school in 1 room local schools and graduated from Stuart High School.

Following graduation he joined the US Army and during WWII he served with the 1st Cavalry Division in the Pacific Theatre. Sergeant Hoffman''s service took him from the Philippine Islands to Tokyo where he was aboard a troop ship in Tokyo Harbor as Japan surrendered and then served in the occupation force restoring civil order in Japan.

Following military service he returned to Stuart where he met Mary Ann Shald and they were married June 1, 1949. They spent the next 67 years raising 6 children, crops and cattle south of Stuart.

Gene passed on to his children and grandchildren, by word and example, faith in God, love of family, an appreciation of nature, a sense of stewardship of the land, respect for animals, love of country, civic responsibility, and a life lived by principles.

In addition to military service, Gene continued to serve his community through St Boniface Church, where he and Mary Ann were active lifelong members, as well as organizations such as Knights of Columbus, American Legion, VFW, and rural fire department. He was a past commander of American Legion Post 115 and a member of Post 115''s perennial State Champion Color Guard and Drill Squad.

Gene, an excellent athlete, played football, basketball and baseball in his younger years, and continued his love of competitive sports as a follower and trivia expert on all things Cornhuskers and Yankees.

One of his favorite pastimes for many years was coaching and cheering on his children and grandchildren as they competed in youth leagues, high school and college sports.

Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann, parents, Bill and Rose Hoffman, and grandsons Jeffrey Van Anne and Michael Nash.
