Reuben was born May 5, 1784, on his father's farm in Virginia and died July 28, 1857, Ross County, Ohio. He is buried in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery which is just outside the city limits of Kingston, Ohio. As to his early life, one would suppose, he worked on his father's farm and in his father's store. Based on later census records, his main occupation was a tailor.

Pension records show:"Reuben Garrett appears with the rank of Pvt. on a Pay Roll of Captain Robert Hills' Company of Infantry, 6th Reg't. Virginia Militia, called into service April 5, 1813, and discharged April 8, 1813 - for April 5 to 8, 1813 - pay per month, 8 dollars - 2 days
amount of pay 53 1/3 cents."

"Reubin Garrett appears with the rank of Pri. on a Pay Roll list of Captain Thomas D. Pitts' Company of Infantry, 6th Reg't. Virginia Militia, called into service April 6 and discharged April 7, 1813, for April 6 to 7, 1813, pay per month, 8 dollars 1 day - amount of pay, 26½ cents."
