Garrett, Silas S.—Enlisted 24 September 1861, 25 years old, as a private in Co. A, 55
th
Infantry. Description at enlistment: 5'9" tall; brown hair; blue eyes; teacher, born Ross
County, Ohio. Transferred to 1st Tennessee Heavy Artillery on 11 December 1863 by
order of General S. A. Hurlbut.

Married Sarah C. Gay in the German Reformed Church in Kingston (Ross) Ohio on 28
September 1856. Their children: Carey Alice born 2 July 1857; Florence Elma born 8
October 1858; Katie born 30 August 1860 and died 30 August 1861; and Charles A. born
11 September 1869.
Silas was taken prisoner at Shiloh on 6 April 1862, taken to Memphis, Tennessee and
then to Montgomery, Alabama. He was paroled at Montgomery on 22 May 1862. Silas
and Sarah moved from Illinois to Memphis in 1869 where he worked for the Memphis
police force and later was a US Marshal. He then became a lawyer. He was also the Post
Commander for the Memphis GAR.
Silas died in Memphis, Tennessee, on 23 July 1885. He is buried at Elmwood Cemetery
in Memphis. Sarah died 13 February 1898.
