Opal Bassett, 85, Tuscola, Ill., died May 28, 2005 at Carle Fountain Hospital in Urbana, Ill.
She worked at numerous restaurants as a waitress and cook for many years, including 27 years at the Hideaway in Villa Grove, Ill., and also did housecleaning for more than 30 years. Her hobbies were antiques, yard sales, canning, cooking and gardening.
Born in the Strode community of Monroe County on Dec. 19, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Anderson and Jane "Janie" (Rhoton) Steen. Her ancestors were charter members of the Beautiful Home Baptist Church in Monroe County.
She was first married to Roy Strode and later married Eugene Bassett. Both are now deceased.
Survivors include two sons, Charles Strode, Pesotum, Ill., and Jimmie Strode, Tuscola; a daughter, Betty Hancock, Villa Grove; a sister, Olene Stults, Paris, Ill.; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Five brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on June 1 at the Joines Funeral Home in Villa Grove, with Rev. Nick Showalter officiating. Burial was at the Tuscola Cemetery.
