Ernest Alvord, 39, of Grayslake, Lake county, who was injured in an automobile accident in which two of his daughters were fatally injured Sunday, died last night in St. Therese hospital, Waukegan.

Alvord's 16 year automobile plunged into five feet of water in a creek after colliding with another car at route 21 and Center st., Grayslake. Nancy died of injuries as the car filled with water.

Alvord's fourth daughter, Patsy, 10, was at home with her mother, Opal. Chief Deputy Sherif Walter L. Atkinson said the family has been placed in a destitute condition because of the accident, and funds are being raised to relieve them. Alvord was a plasterer's helper.

The article below was found in a newspaper that is NOT local to the area of the accident. It was published several days before Mr. Alvord passed away. I found other articles regarding this accident (see memorials for Marilyn and Nancy) in non-local newspapers, which must have been picked up by other sources:

Cab Operator Saves Three Lives Grayslake

A 29-year-old taxi cab operator was credited Monday with saving the lives of a father and two daughters by leaping into a drainage canal to pull them from a wrecked automobile. A third daughter died shortly after she was taken to a Waukegan hospital.

A car driven by Earl Brabandt 44, Antioch, collided with one driven by Ernest Alvord, 39, Grayslake, Sunday, sending the Alvord car 20 feet into the canal.

Arthur Yelden saw the accident from his taxi stand. He dove into the canal and hauled Alvord to safety. The father was too dazed to tell if anyone else was in the car, but Yelden thought there was a chance there might be. He dove into the icy waters second time and pulled out Marilyn Alvord, 12 and her sister Judy, 7. By then the father had revived sufficiently to tell Yelden there was still another girl In the car. Yelden dove into the canal a third time and found Nancy Alvord, 5, wedged in the back seat Yelden finally freed her, but she died a few minutes after arriving at the hospital.
