Winnie Westbury, 68, of Travelers Rest, passed away June 9, 2018. Born in Ft. Gaines, GA, she was the daughter of the late James Frank and Doris Madalia Coleman Gilreath. Ms. Westbury is survived by her sons: Lawrence(Mary Margaret) Westbury, Patrick(Lindsey) Westbury; daughter: Henley(Scottie) Ellis; grandchildren: Adjysen Ellis, Toliven Ellis, Makyla Ellis; brother: Jim(Joan) Gilreath; and nephew: Justin(Jenny) Gilreath.
Ms. Westbury was a teacher and librarian. She graduated from Clemson University in 1972 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Botany and earned her Master’s Degree in Education from SC State University in 1981. She lived in St. Matthews, SC for 30 years and taught at John Ford Middle School in Calhoun County, Edisto High School in Orangeburg County, and Lower Richland High School in Richland County. Ms. Westbury earned her Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from the University of South Carolina in 1992. She was the former Director of the Calhoun County Public Library, and worked as the media specialist at the Fairwold Pendergrass School in Richland County.
Throughout her life, Ms. Westbury was a faithful Christian, having been a member of Jackson Grove United Methodist Church in Travelers Rest, SC, St. Paul United Methodist Church in St. Matthews, SC, and St. Matthews Episcopal Church in St. Matthews, SC. Ms. Westbury was a nature explorer, animal lover, and accomplished geneology researcher.
Graveside service at 11am at Jackson Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery in Travelers Rest, SC.
