James Hadley Mathews (Jim), our beloved husband, father, PaPa, uncle, and friend died on Tuesday, June 5, 2018. Jim was a quietly religious man, and his storytelling, his presence, his wit, and his humor will be truly missed by his family and friends.
Jim was a throw-back to the days when your word was your bond and you took a man at his word. He was a man of many talents and led a varied life, spending many years as a rodeo cowboy belonging to the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. In addition, he was employed by Ralston Purina for 17 years, and retired to build, open and run for 27 years his own barbecue restaurant, South Texas Barbecue, in Rosenberg, Texas with his associate Bobby Hunt. He liked to say that his experience with cattle was that he rode, roped, fed, cooked and finally ate them. South Texas BBQ became a landmark where many friends and customers met on a regular basis. His greatest love, outside of his family, was fishing, and he spent many years bass fishing and guiding on Texas lakes. He was also affiliated with the oil industry spending several years running his own hot-shot business. Little known outside of his family and closest friends was that he was a writer of cowboy poetry, having some of his writings published and sung.
Jim was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on December 13, 1939 and moved to Texas at a young age spending his early childhood around Beaumont, Texas where his father worked for then Humble Oil & Refining Company. The family later moved to Jourdanton, Texas where he graduated from Jourdanton High School. He finished college at Southwest Texas Junior College where he began his rodeo career. He married Jeannette Foerster in 1965 and moved to Rosenberg and eventually resided in Richmond, Texas.
Jim is survived by his wife of 52+ years, two daughters, Elizabeth and her husband David Fairfield, and Adriane and her husband Christopher Gray, three beloved granddaughters, Emma, Ellen and Eden Fairfield, and cherished nieces and nephews of his brother and sister.
Jim is predeceased by his grandparents Fred and Della Hadley, his father and mother, Ray and Mildred (Hadley) Mathews, his older sister, Fredia Mathews, and his younger brother, Richard Mathews. Through his father and mother, he was of Native American descent.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, June 13, at 1:00 p.m. at the Jourdanton City Cemetery, Jourdanton, Texas, and will be conducted by Scotty Smith, Associate Pastor of Cowboy Fellowship Church, Pleasanton, Texas.
Memorials may be made to Lunches of Love, P. O. Box 1161, Rosenberg, Texas 77471, a charity close to Jim’s heart, which is helping to end childhood hunger in the Fort Bend County Area.
