Sarah was born about 1854 in Weston, Missouri. Her family moved to Central City in 1863, where she was one of a handful of black students who attended the first public school organized there.
In 1875 Sarah married Edwin Jones, a barber, and moved to Leadville. After Edwin died in 1890, she moved back in with her parents. She married again in 1893, to Nimrod Gordon, who worked in Denver as a waiter and porter.
Sarah's health started failing a couple of years later, and in 1893, while visiting her parents, she suffered a fatal hemorrhage after a coughing attack. She left no children.
Sarah was buried in the Lee family plot at Riverside Cemetery in Denver.
