Bernice A. Gacek, 81, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday May 26th, 2018 at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine, FL. Beloved mom, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.
Bernie was born on May 2nd, 1937 in Hazelton, PA to John and Anna Racho Knoblauh. She was a graduate of Liberty High School in Bethlehem, PA.
Bernie worked in office administration for Bethlehem Steel, St. Luke's Hospital and General Mills. She worked the overnight shift at St. Luke's Hospital and then managed to race home in time to have breakfast on the table before school for her three annoying (but grateful) children.
Bernie was a member of San Sebastian Church in St. Augustine, FL for 17 years. She loved life and lived it to the maximum. Her family and friends were the center of her world. She was an avid golfer and casino connoisseur. She would never turn down a trip to Las Vegas or a casino boat, community clubhouse, bingo parlor, backyard, Legion Hall or VFW as long as she had a shot to win. While Three Card Poker and Video Poker were her games of choice, she could occasionally be spotted with pull tabs at a corner bar in Northeast Minneapolis.
Bernie was preceded in death by the love of her life Theodore E. Gacek, of Minneapolis, MN, her twin sister Barbara Kostelnik, brother Bernard Knoblauh and her companion Jack Worrell.
Bernie is survived by her three children: Stephen (Dianne) Orth, John (Susan) Orth, Barbara Ann (Mark) Freimuth, her brother Jack (Rita Jean) Knoblauh, nephew John Knoblauh, Jay Knoblauh and Jeffrey Knoblauh, sister-in-law Alice Knoblauh, beloved niece Susan Knoblauh and Anne Knab, grandchildren Jillene Walker (Orth), Lindsey Marquez (Orth), Emma Holzhueter (Orth), Kirsten Martinez (Orth) and five great grandchildren.
Bernie's life will be celebrated in a private family ceremony and she will be interred next to Teddy at Jacksonville National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Sisters of St. Francis Rosary Hall at 6832 Convent Blvd Sylvania, OH 43560. Craig Funeral Home Crematory Memorial Park is in charge of arrangements.
