On Aug., 1862, while in his 22nd year, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was mustered in as Orderly Sergeant of Co. G, 142 Pennsylvania Vol. Infantry. After this, his command was ordered to the "front," and barely escaped being in the Battle of Antietam. After more battles, he was captured and taken with other prisoners south. For about 20 months, he was held, having been confined at Libby Prison and others along the way. In 1865, by reason of general order, he was discharged with rank of Major.
