Jean Benoist de Courville joined the Armée française, as had his father and elder brother Charles before him. His career took him to Martinique and Guadeloupe, but poor health necessitated his return to France in 1787. He was made a Chevalier of Saint-Louis in October 1791. The Revolution forced him to flee France as an émigré to London, where he lived briefly at Whitehall. He died in the city of Lincoln and was buried in the Anglican church of Saint Mary Magdalene on 12 July 1794, the parish register referring to him as “Le Sieur Jean Benoit de Courville, a French Refugee.”
