Harold W. Bartholomew
Harold W. "Buck" Bartholomew, Sr. 84, retired Valparaiso insurance agent and former Center Township trustee, died today at Whispering Pines Homes for Senior Citizens after a long illness.
Born in Valparaiso June 12, 1894, he was the son of Girdon S. and Jennie (Salisbury) Bartholomew. He married Gladys Ritz on May 26, 1928 in Crown Point. She survives together with a son, Harold J. "Buck" Bartholomew of Valparaiso, and two grandchildren.
Bartholomew was a founder and former chairman of the local recreation council which was a forerunner to the Valparaiso Park Board. He was twice elected township trustee. During his second term, Valparaiso and Center Township schools were consolidated into Valparaiso Community Schools. He was a World War I Navy veteran and during World War II he served on Selective Service and Gas Rationing boards.
A member of First Presbyterian Church, he served many terms as church trustee. He was a life member of Porter Lodge 137 F & AM and a member of American Legion Post 94.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church.The Rev. Ormond L. Hampton Jr. will officiate, and burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Bartholomew Funeral Home. The family requests memorials to Whispering Pines.
