David Lane Green, age 74, passed away at his home in South Houston, TX, surrounded by his family on Sunday, May 13, 2018. "Big Dave" was born in Jacksonville, TX to Willie Wilburn and Julia (Baker) Green. Dave graduated from Jacksonville High School in 1961. In 1965, he married his best friend, Martha. He was drafted into the Army in the spring of 1965, serving overseas in Germany during the Vietnam War. After returning home from his service, he and Marty had two children, Chris and Sheri. Dave and Marty enjoyed traveling the country together as well as spending time with family and friends. He was a member of the South Houston Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years, three times voted Fireman of the Year before retiring as Fire Chief in 2003 when he was elected to office in the city's council. Dave also served as a reserve police officer for 17 years and was voted Outstanding Reserve Officer of the Year by American Legion Post 490. He held State Fireman's Level II Instructor Certification and taught at both Harris County Fire Fighters Association and Texas A&M Fire Fighter School. He held teaching certificates from Texas A&M, Purdue and Michigan Universities. Dave's full time job was Instructor for Pipe Fitters Local Union 211 Apprentice Program. He was a Master Mason of Lodge #1295 and the Quartermaster of VFW Post #9188. Dave served as a South Houston Little League Coach, was an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Texas PTA, and a member of First Baptist Church of South Houston. His passions were his faith, family, friends and fishing. He is survived by his brother, Homer Green, his sister, Katie Gillispie, his beloved wife of 53 years, Martha Green, his son Chris (Debbie) Green, his daughter Sheri (James) Howard, four wonderful grandchildren, Jennifer Green, Stephanie Green, Trey Howard and Lydia Howard, as well as countless cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11:00a.m. Monday, May 21, 2018 at First Baptist Church South Houston, TX (315 Georgia, South Houston, TX). Burial will follow at Houston National Cemetery (10410 Veterans Memorial Dr., Houston, TX). The family will hold a visitation at Grandview Funeral Home (8501 Spencer Hwy, Pasadena, TX) from 3:00-6:00p.m in the chapel with the Masonic Funeral Ritual being held at 4:00p.m. Sunday, May 20, 2018.
