September 25, 1923 – May 13, 2018
People that knew Ellen Catherine Bertagna would say that she was a profoundly spiritual, physically strong, artistically gifted, warm and loving example to emulate. Her trademark smile was infectious. A spectacular cook, she was known within her family for her holiday parties and splendid meals.
Leaving her friends and family in grief and sadness, Ellen, 94, passed away Sunday, May 13, 2018 at Feather River Hospice in Paradise, California.
On Tuesday, September 15, 1923, in Sterling Colorado, Ellen was born to Giuseppe and Maria (nee Cioeta) Bertapelle. She moved to California with her family to settle in Glenn in 1936 where she helped her father, Joe, farm.
Being the oldest child, she was expected to help at home and was not given the opportunity to finish her schooling. This was a lifelong regret and why she encouraged her children to pursue college.
In 1943, Peter Bertagna was renting pasture for his sheep on the Bertapelle Ranch. It was love at first sight when she met Peter from Montgomery Creek, California. They married July 8, 1944.
For a few years, they rented a ranch outside of Corning. In 1951, they bought a ranch in Orland where they lived until 1980. Not wanting to leave the community, they sold their 200-acre ranch and moved across town to a three-acre farm. Together they traveled extensively and celebrated 50-years of marriage before Pete’s death in 1994.
While living in Orland, Ellen was an active member of the Altar Society at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church.
Ellen moved to Chico in 2000 and spent 10-years at Oakmont Independent Living. In 2010, she moved to Paradise. Until recently, she was cared for by the loving staff at Sunshine House Assisted Living.
Besides her husband, Peter, preceding her in death are: her parents, Giuseppe and Maria Bertapelle; her brother, John Bertapelle; and sister, June Lewis. Also preceding her are: Joe and Marian Bertagna of Round Mountain, California; Neblie and Mildred Bertagna; Lloyd Keefer and Jim Bertagna of Montgomery Creek, California. Also deceased are Victor Sr. and Caroline Lammers of Anderson, California.
