Verlin A. Fairchild Sr. Posted: Saturday, April 11, 2015 1:49 pm Born on August 19, 1922. Died on Tuesday, April 7, 2015. Born the third of eight children to John W. and wife Ollie Fairchild in rural Eufaula, Okla. During childhood endured the plight of the “Dust Bowl” and the “Great Depression.” Worked in CCC camps and was a boxer in the “Golden Gloves” as a teenager. Joined the Army at 18, got his nickname “Jerry” at Army boot camp. As an officers cook, he partook in liberating the Philippines with the “MacArthur Armada.” He learned to play darts in London soon after the Nazi occupation of Paris. Joined the newly formed “Air Force” in 1946, where he was part of the CB’s that built the air bases across Alaska to the North Pole until 1948. Used his G.I. bill and became a Certified Welder and Smelter. As a subcontractor smelted the surface gold on space satellite(s). Welded the Louisiana and Texas oil coasts “on” and “off shore” oil platforms, in the crows nest and under water, grain elevators and other demanding jobs. An excellent fisherman, horseman, farmer and hunter, that was comfortable under the stars. You may know him as the old man that cut onions and made slaw for Otis and then Ed until around 2003. He also won the “Beard contest” at the first “Burger Day!” To him, life was an ongoing adventure. All the while, he raised two families of children; two daughters with his first wife from the Philippines, Corolyn and Mary Jane of Laredo, Texas. He met his next wife, Opal and her five children in El Reno in 1959 who bore him two sons, Verlin and Allen. His latter years were spent with his last wife, Hattie. Among his remaining known family are his two sisters, Mary Fairchild Russell of Moore, Okla., and Dorothy Fairchild Helvie of Wichita, Kan.; two sons, Verlin A. Fairchild Jr. of Yukon, Okla., and Allen Ray Fairchild of Cushing, Okla.; and daughters, Carolyn Mays of Laredo, Texas, and Debbie Shank of Roanoke, Va. Twenty-six grandchildren and many great-grandchildren are among his survivors. Verlin A. Fairchild Sr.
