Cyrus was the son of Amma Bass Carroll and Martha M. Barden of Sampson Co., NC. He served in the U.S. Navy in the war with Spain as a Fireman 2nd Class. On Sep 12, 1918, he was living in Cleveland, OH, where he registered for the World War I draft. He was described as medium in height and build, with brown eyes and dark hair. In Ohio, Cyrus worked as a stationery engineer, firebrick salesman and proprietor of a boarding house.
In 1907, Cyrus married Catherine McCann, daughter of Edward and Ann McCann of County Mayo, Ireland. They were the parents of three children; Agnes, Martha and Betty. In 1945, Cyrus and Catherine moved to Maricopa Co., AZ. Catherine died there in 1950.
