A lifelong Atlanta resident, he was the founder and chairman of the board of W.D. Alexander Company, distributor for General Electric, and former president of Alexander-Seewald Company, the first car dealer and automotive parts distributor in the South East, which had been established in 1890 by his father, W.D. Alexander.

He was a member of the Peachtree Christian Church and belonged to the Masons, the Shrine, and the Atlanta Athletic Club.

His unexpected death was due to a heart attack that occurred while driving home from work.

The survivors included his wife, Margaret; a daughter, Mrs. Warren Luchans of Atlanta; two sons, William J. "Bill" and Martin Daniel, both of Atlanta; a sister, (Mrs.) Isabel Van der Veer, of Waynesboro, Virginia; and two brothers, R. Jackson “Jack” and John A. Alexander, both of Atlanta.
