BREWTON, Charles R. Jr., 90, left us for a better place. He died on April 19, 2018, in his home in Richmond, Virginia, next to his bride of 62 years. Charlie began life in Blackshear, Georgia. He graduated from Savannah High School in 1946, marrying the love of his life in 1955. Mr. and Mrs. Brewton raised two beautiful daughters, Tina and Charmaine. A railroad man, he steadily contributed to the success of the nation's freight railway heavyweights, becoming the District Sales Manager for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Company and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company, later known as Chessie System and now CSX. In 1981, Charlie was presented with the Merchandise Traffic Department Achievement Award and recognized during the company's annual meeting at The Greenbrier. The railroad brought the Brewton's to Bishopville, Columbia, Richmond, Atlanta and Baltimore. But Charlie's call to leadership summoned him far beyond the railroad tracks along the east coast. He served his country honorably as a medic in the Korean War, stationed in Stuttgart, Germany. Along the way, Charlie had the joy of sharing his Christian faith with all those he encountered. A collection of Charlie's treasured papers reveal the things he held closest. His journey to faith is documented on an eloquently understated handwritten page; Charlie kept his family memories close, holding on to newspaper clippings that featured children and grandchildren and highlights of his life's work he kept, organized in a labeled folder. After spending 19 years on the waiting list, Charlie enjoyed more than two decades of memorable Sunday afternoons at the Masters. He took great pride in sharing his badges among friends and family. He walked the course pimento cheese sandwich in hand with each of his grandsons more than a dozen times, encountering some of his all-time favorites: Arnold Palmer, Nick Faldo, Gary Player and Freddie Couples. Charlie will be remembered for his serving heart, his empathy for other people no matter their circumstances and the love he shared with his family. He is survived by his wife, Elsie Brewton; his daughters, Tina Sprouse and Charmaine DeMcCuttac (Jerome); his siblings, Clifford Brewton (Rachel), Betty Houck and Bobbie Thomas (Danny); and his grandchildren, Cassie DeMcCuttac, Trey Sprouse (Chelsea) and Zach Sprouse (Avery). Friends and family will gather to remember and celebrate Charlie's life at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 12, 2018, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, 11220 Nuckols Rd., Glen Allen, Virginia 23059. In lieu of flowers, all are invited to send donations to Samaritan's Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, North Carolina 28607, Bible Broadcasting Network, P.O. Box 7300, Charlotte, North Carolina 28241, or the Music Ministry at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, 11220 Nuckols Rd., Glen Allen, Virginia 23059.
