Commodore Nathaniel J.K. Patch retired, died in Buffalo on Sunday . He was born in Otisfield, Maine on May 6, 1848 and received his appointment to the Naval Academy from Massachusetts in September 1868. He graduated 4 years later and was assigned to the Sabine. He later served n the Worster, Richmond,Wabash,Powhatan,Kearange,Charlston,Alliance,Celtic and Montgomery.He reached the rank of Captain early in 1900. He was retired in June of that year on his own application receiving the rank of Commodore. During the war with Spain he was supervisor of the Port of NY City and in July and August of 1898 was on the steamer St. Louis. His obituary said he was to be buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Buffalo NY but there is a large stone with Commodore N.J.K.Patch& dates in Evans. Survived by his father Benjamin Patch and brother Maurice B. Patch
1912 book "Who's Who in the World" states the following:Nathaniel Jordan Knight Patch, Commodore US Navy. Applied to US Naval Academy from Mass. in 1865 and graduated in 1869. Retired June 30, 1905 with rank of Commodore. Served for 22 years at sea and 14 years ashore. Son of Benjamin & Harriet E.F. Patch. Home Hotel Lenox, Boston, Mass.
