ELSIE ANDERSON, 91
She worked at the old Harris Laundry in Guntersville for about 20 years and then worked at City Hall until she retired. She also sat with people in their declining years.
Elsie Donaldson Anderson of Union Grove died Thursday, July 19, 2012, in the Golden Living nursing home at Arab. She had lived there since 2004. She was 2 days short of her 92nd. birthday.
She grew up in Parches Cove near Union Grove, where her parents farmed. They were A. A. and Lena Mitchell Donaldson. She went to school at Union Grove.
Her first job was at Harris Laundry in Northtown. Then she worked as a custodian at City Hall, almost directly across Gunter Avenue from the laundry.
While working at City Hall she also started sitting with elderly people. She sat for years for Elizabeth Bonner, who was well-known for the many new cars she donated to the city for use by the police. Ms. Anderson also sat for Mrs. Marion Lusk.
Her son Cecil Tungate made news in 1974 when he was still a teenager. He rode with the late Bill Harris as co-pilot of the Miss Guntersville Lake, Mr. Harris's famous 14-foot fishing boat. It was the longest trip Mr. Harris had taken up to then, some 3,600 miles on the Tennessee, Ohio, Mississippi, and Cumberland Rivers.
Ms. Anderson attended various Churches of Christ. She enjoyed making quilts, using her own patterns.
She is survived by 2 sons, Cecil Tungate (Donna) of Union Grove and Donnie Self (Joyce) of Ashburn, Virginia; 3 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Her funeral was Sunday at Gober Funeral Chapel with Bro. Ken Tyler officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Olive Cemetery. Pallbearers were Vernon Durham, Bill Knowling, Bill Boehme, Chris Boehme, Bill Cox and Joseph Knighten.
