Kenneth Duane Chappell of Fairbury, Nebraska, was born November 3, 1936, in Haddam, Kansas. Son of Clell and Lucille (Simmons) Chappell. Ken entered into his eternal life on Thursday, April 12, 2018, while at Jefferson Community Health and Life in Fairbury, surrounded by his sons and daughter, at the age of 81 years.

Ken grew up and resided in Belleville, Kansas, until he graduated from Belleville High School in 1956. He then attended Fairbury College and received his Diploma in Pre-Secondary Education in 1957, while playing on the National Junior College runner-up football team. Upon completion of Junior College, Ken enlisted in the United States Army. He completed the U.S. Army Aviation School for a single rotor helicopter in Fort Rucker, Alabama, and then was promoted to Crew Chief. Ken was also a member of the 101st Airborne Division, also known as the Screaming Eagles, at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He received his Honorable Discharge on August 31, 1964.

On September 16, 1959, he married Sharon Fisbeck Chappell. To this union, four children were born: Doug, Bob, Pam, and Kipp Chappell. They lived in Fairbury, Nebraska, for a short time and then moved to Simi Valley, California. Ken and Sharon lived there for eight years before relocating and settling down in Fairbury in 1970. Ken established C & F Roofing and stayed busy with his business until he retired in 2010. Over the years he built a legacy of hard work and helped to instill this quality in many of the young men who worked for him. Today, many of these men credit Ken for the skills and work ethic he demanded from them on a daily basis. Until recent months, he could still found working the sheet metal bench and keeping busy with numerous projects.

Ken was an avid sports enthusiast. He spent many summers coaching his sons’ baseball teams and supporting the wide variety of events that his children participated in, whether it was motocross or baton twirling. Until his death, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren from the stands. Ken loved working in his yard and especially enjoyed harvesting a bountiful garden each year. Cucumbers and tomatoes were his specialty! Ken could often be found relaxing on the screened in porch enjoying a cup of coffee (or a beer) while reading the newspaper and catching up with family and friends.

Ken was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon; parents Clell and Lucille; and his sister JoAnne Milner.

He will be forever remembered by son Doug and wife Kelley Chappell of Fort Worth, Texas; son Bob Chappell of Kansas City, Kansas; daughter Pam and husband Roger Pollman of Fairbury; and son Kipp and wife Anne Chappell of Fairbury. His grandchildren Chais and wife Maude Chappell of Fort Worth; Dillon Chappell of Houston, Texas; Cassidy Chappell and fiance Andrew Shelton of Bennington, Oklahoma; Trevor Meyer and fiance Jen Richtarik of Fairbury; Trent and wife Miranda Pollman of Lincoln; Shelby Pollman, Sidney Pollman, Beckett Chappell, and Grady Chappell all of Fairbury. His brother Don Chappell of Burton, Kansas and numerous brother and sister in laws and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be Monday April 23, 2018 at 11:00 at Faith Lutheran Church in Fairbury with Pastor Ken Hart officiating. Memorials will go to the Family's Choice. Cremation has taken place. Burial will be at a later date. Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home in Fairbury is in charge of arrangements.
