FUNERAL OF WM. LEWIS
Funeral services over the remains of William Lewis, whose death was announced in last week's issue, were held from the home 2:30 p. m. Thursday, October 24, the pastor of the Methodist church, Rev. R. W. Duel, officiating. A large number of friends and acquaintances attended. The pall bearers were C. M. Sprague, A. E. Erwin, Wm. Pangburn, D. Cleveland, A. M. Stiles and Abner Lamb.
Mr. Lewis' death came suddenly. He was working in the field in the afternoon of Monday, October, 21. A stroke of apoplexy came and Mr. Lew- is fell to the ground where he was found shortly after and carried into the house. He never regained consciousness and passed away the following day.
William Lewis was born in Montreal, Canada, May 24, 1833, on Queen Victoria's birthday. He come to the United States in the late fifties and settled in Illinois. It was there that he met Emma Parker and on March 6, 1861, was married to her. A little later Mr. and Mrs. Lewis moved on to a farm near Red Wing Minn. Mr. Lewis served in the civil war one year, enlisting in the 58th. Illinois Volunteers He went to Chicago to enter the service. In the fall of 1866 Mr. and Mrs. Lewis removed to Stearns county, settling on the farm near Sauk Centre where they both died. Mr. Lewis was buried a year from the day on which his wife died.
Mr. Lewis was well and widely known in this vicinity. He was a man of sterling character and made his mark in the community, being successful in his business ventures. He was a member of the order of Odd Fellows, belonging to the local lodge.
There are three surviving children, Harry Lewis and Mrs. C. O. Van Dyke of Long Prairie and Miss Marion Lewis of Sauk Centre. Miss Lewis was living at home and was present at the at the time of her father's death. Harry Lewis and Mrs. Van Dyke attended the funeral. Two sisters, Mrs. M. A. Keegan of Chicago and Mrs. Jos. Britton of Brainerd, Minn., were at the funeral, as was also Mrs. Irving Beebe of Fergus Falls, a niece of the late Mrs. William Lewis.
