Nancy Elizabeth 'Nannie' Wright was born on 6 Jan 1860 in Linden, Warren County, Virginia to James William Wright, Sr. and Martha F. Silman Wright. She had an older sister, Laura Belle and an older brother, James William Wright, Jr.

Nancy married William Alexander Carlyle, Sr. on 1 August 1882 in Clarke County, VA. She was William's third wife, as his first two wives had previously died. William was 58 years old and Nancy was 22 years old. Witnesses on their marriage license were her parents, William and Martha Wright and his parents, John "Jack" and Betsy Carlyle.

They would have two son's, William Alexander, Jr. and Thomas Washington Carlyle. They would also have three daughters, Ada Mary, Carrie Belle and Bessie Maybelle.

"Nannie" passed away in 1924 and is buried with her husband in the Carpers Valley Cemetery. The cemetery was part of the old Carper family farm with many unmarked graves on private property. There is a marker for her and "Alexander" signifying that they are "buried near here" as the exact location is unknown. This cemetery can be reached by Carper Valley Road (Rt. 723) and Kenny Lane. Public access is between lots 241 and 291 on Kenny Lane and is approximately 200 feet from the edge of the road.
