Moved to Dallas with his family from Missouri when he was 14 years old. In 1849 went with 80 men to Wichita Mountains, Oklahoma, to hunt for gold. In 1862 served in Company B of 19th Texas Calvary under Col. Nat Burford. At the close of the war, he returned to his farm in Dallas County - 270 acres with a fine view of Dallas.
