John was the son of John William and Christian (Hoyle) Bartoll and was baptized in Marblehead on 26 Oct 1712.

He married Mary Fortune on 21 June 1733, with whom he had as many as 13 children. She died in Apr, 1766. He then married Hannah Crawley on either 18 Dec 1766 or 8 Jan 1767. She later became his widow.

He served as Captain of the Marblehead militia about 1770.

There are four adjacent homes on Front Street that have plaques marking them as built by the Bartoll family, beginning with John.
