Air Traffic Reporter. He worked for eighteen years as the "KFI in the Sky" traffic reporter as part of the popular "Lohman and Barkley" radio show on station KFI-AM (640) in Los Angeles. His job was to guide millions of motorists through Southern California traffic snarls every morning. He was killed on-the-job in a 1986 plane crash shortly after takeoff from Fullerton Municipal Airport. According to a witness, his blue and white Cessna Cardinal seemed to develop engine trouble at an altitude of about 300 to 500 feet. He had nine years of experience in radio and television along with flying lessons courtesy of the GI Bill, when he became Boston's first flying traffic reporter in 1961. Just months before his death, he said in a "Times" magazine interview, "I had never even heard an air traffic reporter” at the time he started this profession. According to his wife, he missed his twenty-five-year flying traffic reporter anniversary by two weeks.
