He was a resident of Frankfort since the early 1940s. He was a mechanic and truck driver for Macy Materials for 23 years, retiring in 1981. He served in the U.S. Army 1945-1946. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and Southern Baptist Church. He loved to garden and invent Christmas gifts, like the "Gobber."
He was born March 24, 1927 in Cumberland County, Tenn., to Gather and Helen Emery Abston. He married Dorothy Chester in August 1947 and they divorced.
He is survived by a son, James (Debbie) and a daughter, Shirley (Ronald) Pitman, both of Frankfort; two sisters, Fay Freels of Lafayette and Anne Melon of Gary; one brother, Edward of Florida; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
One son and three brothers preceded him in death.
