Believed to be the son of John and Margaret Lindsay.

(His death index listed his parents as James and Martha Bates Lindsay, which does not seem correct. As the Names of parents differ on his brother and sister's death indexes.)

At about the age of five, he came to Morgan county with his parents.
He was raised on a farm five miles north of Jacksonville. At the age of 25, he relocated to Jacksonville to manage an estate left by his father.
He became a carpenter and entered a lumber business.
He built a large building at North Main, East Douglas, and Mauvaisterre streets, and operated a retail and wholesale hardware business.

Married Eliza J. Smith, the daughter of Robert and Mary Ann Smith. They married December 14, 1876 in Morgan County.

Survived by three daughters: Mrs. George Cockin of Alexander, Mrs. J. C. Lathrop of Jacksonville, and Miss Annetta Frances Lindsay of Jacksonville; five grandchildren: Harold, George, John Robert, and Ethel Harriett Cockin of Alexander, and Mrs. Jason Fox of Jerseyville; three great grandchildren: Phyllis Jean, Donnie Lee, and George William Cockin; a sister, Mrs. Eli Crawford of Jacksonville; and a brother, Joe Lindsay of Jacksonville.
