BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF WILLIAM H. MURPHY
William H. Murphy, brief mention of the death of whom was made in last evening Herald, was born on the John Lummis farm, Gilmer township, February 24, 1836. The farm at that time belonged to his grandfather, Benjamin Walby, years ago deceased but remembered by many of the old citizens. Mr. Murphy's father and mother came to Quincy in the spring of 1831 and were married in January, 1835, to the union eleven children being born, six sons and five daughters. Of this family only six members are now living. They are John B. Murphy, of Gilmer township; Mrs. Ellen Mehaffey, of Burton township; Thomas Murphy, of Chicago; Joseph and Charles Murphy, of Spokane, Washington, and Mrs. Sarah J. Pfanschmidt, of Quincy. The first wife of the deceased was Miss Katie Powell , before marriage, and she was a sister of Frank Powell, of Bentley, Hancock county, and William and George B. Powell, of Ellington township, all prominent residents of their respective home communities. To this union there was born one son, George W Murphy, of Quincy, residing near Third and State. The second wife of the deceased was Mrs. Margaret Demoss, daughter of the late Isaac Sammons, of Columbus township, and a member of one of the oldest and most influential families of the county. To this union one daughter was born, Edith, now residing in Idaho. For the past seven years Mr. Murphy and wife have made their home with the step-daughter of the deceased, Mrs. Mary Hosford, 622 Broadway, and she has proved a real daughter in her devotion to her foster father, doing all in her power to make his declining years comfortable. No daughter could have.done more for a parent than Mrs. Hosford for the deceased. to his vows and. obligations and duties.
