Nell Coker Farr, age 96, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 27, 2018 at Shannondale of Maryville.

Nell was born February 4, 1922 at home in Louisville, TN to Erby and Ethel Yearout Coker.

Nell was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, aunt, cousin, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She lived life to the fullest for 96 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Kellas Farr, brother Walter Coker, and sisters Myrtle Wilkinson, Louise Teffeteller, Mary Blanche Brown, and Betty Byrd.

She leaves her sister Bobbie Ramsey; daughter Peggy Farr Hammonds and her husband, Gary Hammonds of Newport, TN; and son Glen Farr and his wife Kathy Barber Farr of Knoxville. She was “Nanny” to 6 grandchildren: Molly Hammonds Scarbrough, Athens, TN; John Hammonds, Newport, TN; Clint Hammonds, Newport, TN; Dan Hammonds, Greeneville, TN; Kelly Farr, Knoxville and Jason Farr, Charlottesville, VA. In addition, she leaves 16 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends were one of the most important elements of her life and she made each one feel special.

Nell was the valedictorian of Mentor Elementary School in Blount County and graduated from Friendsville High School. She worked at the Blount County Court House and Spear’s Photography while her husband John served in World War II. After the war, she worked as a bookkeeper at Farr’s Esso and Farr’s Auto & Home Supply in Alcoa (Farrport) for many years. She spent her later years as a resident of Shannondale Retirement Community in Maryville where she made numerous friends and received loving and supportive care from the entire staff.

She was a life-long, and the oldest living member, of Armona Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to her favorite charity: St. Jude Children’s Hospital (stjude.org), or the charity of your choice.

Family will receive friends from 4:00 until 5:00 PM, Friday, March 30, 2018 at Smith Trinity Chapel. Celebration of Life will follow at 5:00 PM with Pastor Jason Brown. Smith Funeral and Cremation Service, Maryville, 865-983-1000.
