W. David Beckenholdt, 88, passed beyond us unexpectedly Feb. 28, 2018, at his home in Newport, Oregon.

He was born April 6, 1929 in Bellflower, Illinois to Jacob and Bertha Hender Beckenholdt. He and his beloved wife, Mary, were both active in Christian Science, and married in 1961 at Fayetteville, Arkansas. They both were involved with the University of Arkansas, then the University of Illinois, and finally the University of Connecticut. Dave got his MA in journalism, but felt the draw of his upbringing on an Illinois farm, and turned to farming in Missouri before taking over the family's 1883 farm in Farmer City, the third generation there. They enjoyed traveling — the US, Canada and Europe, and maintained their love affair for those 49 years. He retired to the Oregon coast, enjoying its mild weather and ocean view.

He was predeceased by his son, George, and three siblings. He is survived by daughters, Nancy (David) Altshue, Bloomington, and Margie (Randy) White, Farmer City; stepsons, Charles and Richard Ford; 11 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Dave's wit, humor, gracious manner, and care for others won over everyone he met. His gentle, sweet nature will be missed.
