Tombstone reads "Here lyeth the body of the Hon. Lewis Burwell, son of Major Lewis Burwell and Lucy his wife, of the county of Gloucester, who first married Abigail Smith, of ye family of ye Bacons, by whom he had four sons and six daughters; and, after her death, to Martha, the widow of the Hon. William Cole, by whom he had two sons and three daughters, and departed this life 19th day of December Anno Domini 1710, leaving behind him three sons and six daughters." A computer rendering of the original Fairfield Mansion, before the back wing was enlarged and the right half of the front was dismantled.

Completed about 1694, it was the first, and best, example of an English manor house in the New World, and remained until it burned two hundred years later.

Fairfield Mansion in the late 1800's before it burned. Notice the right side of the original front section has been dismantled, the rear wing had been enlarged and the original front stairs have been removed and the front is no longer the front.
