CIVIL WAR VETERAN
A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 7 as a private with Co. K, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, in Gettysburg.

The rest of Abraham Rhodes' data is less certain. "Rhodes" is a common name in south-central Pennsylvania, is spelled numerous ways - often promiscuously so per individual - and exists in both singular and plural forms for each spelling variation. To confuse matters further, it was often used interchangeably with the German "Roth." The company descriptive list of the 165th Pennsylvania claims he was born in Adams County, but that source is not always accurate, and every online family tree says his nativity was in Manchester Township, York County. Many Rhodes families lived in that area, and he may have been the son of Abraham & Leah (Stier) Rhoads.

His marital history is widely reported but varies from post to post. By piecing together a variety of family trees and censuses, it appears that he married Rachel S. Shellenberger in 1840 at York Springs, Adams County, and fathered Sarah "Sadie" (b. 10/24/41), Margaret Louisa (b. 06/25/43 - married Henry Albert Naylor), William H. (b. 08/21/45, d. 09/11/46), Leah (b. @1847), Alexander Abraham (b. 11/14/48), Emeline Jane (b. 09/08/51), Kate (b. @1855), and John Calvin (b. 1858). Rachel died in 1859, and he married Eliza Jane Moore that same year, fathering Laura (b. 1861), Ida (b. @1862), Eliza (b. @1865), Charles (b. @1867), Edwin (b. @1869), Frederick @ George (b. @1873), Benjamin (b. @1875), and Edna (b. @1876). There are reports that he married a Sarah but no hard evidence emerged during my search.

The 1850 and 1860 censuses show him living in Dillsburg, York County, which means that he was living in a draft district that would have prevented conscription into the 165th Pennsylvania. According to family lore, he opened a carpentry shop in York Springs, Adams County, and several family trees report his children with Eliza were born there. That not only explains his military service with the 165th but why he is buried in Sunnyside Cemetery and not Dillsburg. There is a slim possibility that he enlisted as substitute and that his military records do not reflect that.

It is also reported that in 1877 he moved to York County, living in an area of town known as Healthville, and sometime after 1880 continued eastward to Philadelphia where he remained until his death.
