Robert Newton Nunemacher was the son of Charles B. Nunemacher and Ariette (Ettie) Smith. He married Lillie May Skelton, daughter of John Gibson Skelton, Jr. and Alice Matilda Snyder, 6 May 1906 in Ashland, Clark County, Kansas. His wife survives, along with one son and two daughters.

Robert and his parents arrived in Ashland, Kansas, on 24 December 1884. There his father became the town's postmaster. Robert attended public schools in Ashland and later attended a business college in Kansas City, Missouri. During World War I, Robert served as an assessor and commander of the home guard during the war and also sold government bonds.

After college, Robert started farming and ranching in the Ashland area, but a horse fell with him resulting in permanent injuries. These injuries forced a change of occupation. Although he kept the farms, in 1905 he erected a business building in Ashland and there he opened a men's clothing store. For the next 16 years, it was a very successful business for Robert. At that time, he retired and spent the rest of his life looking after his farms.

Robert and Lillie lived in Ashland, Kansas most of their married life. There, they were both members of the local Methodist Church. They both loved gardening and music. Robert was a highly respected man of the Ashland community.
