Howard Eugene Bettencourt

Howard Eugene Bettencourt was called home peacefully to our Lord on February 6, 2018, after a long illness. This was one day after his 89th birthday when he enjoyed strawberry shortcake in the hospital with his family.

Howard was born of Portuguese descent in Livermore February 5, 1929, and was a lifelong resident. He graduated from Danville High School and married the love of his life, Jean, in 1951. Together they raised three children. Howard farmed barley and raised cattle with his father in the Livermore valley for many years. In later years he and his father, along with his sister Pat, raised beans in Linden. He was active in Alameda County Farm Bureau. When he retired from farming, Howard continued doing custom dozing, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He also helped Jean care for her sister Jerry, for 12 years until she passed in 2003. Howard took loving care of his wife for several years before she passed in 2015.

Howard was an ace mechanic can could fix everything from farm machinery to cars. He could wire, plumb, build, and fabricate just about anything he set his mind to. He tended his thornless boysenberries and was well known for his berry pies. He won many 1st place blue ribbons from the Alameda County Fair for his pies, including as recently as 2017. He also loved playing pool with friends twice a week at the Livermore Senior Center.

During retirement Howard and Jean traveled to many countries including Portugal, the U.K., and Australia. They also had 8 classmates, their "club bunch", that they socialized with regularly for at least 55 years. Howard was a lifelong member of St. Michael's Parish and for many years served as an usher. He lived a long and full life will be missed Jean sorely. They are reunited at last in heaven.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Jean, his parents Walter and Erma Bettencourt, and his brother, Norman. He is survived by his sisters Shirlee Peters and Pat Lombardi, daughter Kathleen (Stephen) Smith, sons Mark (Chris) and Michael (Sharrie) Bettencourt. Howard also leaves grandchildren Sara (Dan) May, David Bettencourt, Shawn and Dave Higgins, Shaley (Craig) Myers, and Hillary (Jimmy) Sigman. Great-grandchildren are Jacob, Logan, and Molly May, Parker and Jasmin Higgins, Adam and Gavin Myers, Jimmy (JV) and Sydney Sigman.

Visitation will be from 6-7pm followed by a rosary at Callaghan's Mortuary in Livermore Thursday, March 1st, 2018. A memorial mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 2nd, at Saint Michael's Church.
