Wife Fatally Wounds Husband, Ends Own Life at Sand Coulee

Mrs. Gretta Keko, 55, shot and fatally wounded her husband, Matt Keko, 63, and then committed suicide by shooting herself through the head twice with a .22 caliber revolver Saturday afternoon at the Keko home. Mrs. Keko died instantly. The husband was taken to Columbus hospital and is not expected to live.

The double tragedy was discovered by Jeanette Keko, 30, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Keko, at 6:10 Saturday evening. She arrived at the home, finding the rear door locked. Breaking a window she was able to gain access.

Keko, according to the daughter, was found lying on a lounge in the parlor of the four-room residence. He was partly unconscious and suffering from three bullet wounds. One bullet passed into the head, while a second penetrated his throat, The third wound, probably the most serious, was caused by a bullet piercing his chest, a few inches to the right of the heart. Keko, stated his daughter, was unable to talk when found.

After shooting her husband, the wife walked into a small closet near the kitchen. Placing her head on a pillow, she shot herself twice. One of the bullets entered the right ear, penetrating the brain and apparently instantly caused death. The other bullet also entered the head a few inches above the ear. When found, the revolver was found lying in Mrs. Keko's lap.

Gus Auitio, the first neighbor to arrive at the home, went immediately to Keko, who was lapsing into unconsciousness. Summoning his strength, the husband whispered in the Finnish language, "Mamma done it."

Miss Keko, according to statements made to Sheriff Norton, attributed the shooting to the mental and physical condition of her parents. Keko, she stated, had for months been slowly dying of cancer, and the wife had been constantly worried by his condition. "I can't stand it much longer," she declared a few days ago, according to the daughter.

The famiily, according to Sheriff Norton, was not in financial difficulties, as neighbors stated that both Keko and his wife were possessed of considerable funds.

In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Keko is survived by the following relatives: Mrs. John Nevers, Vardian, Wash.; Mrs. Robin Murray, Malta, Mont.; Mrs. Peter Ruonavar, Gay, Mich.

Early this morning Mr. Keko died from his wounds, it was resported at the Columbus hospital.
